The garden has been planted from scratch over the last 30 years by Vivian Russell in response to Borrowdale’s legendary rainfall. Topiary in box and yew predominates, designed to echo the shapes of the surrounding fells. It gives the garden structure in winter and a green foil for the plants in spring and summer. The ethos of the garden has always been to ‘live and let live’, and through trial and error, a collection of easy, slug proof perennials and ferns has been built up over the years with no recourse to chemicals. The garden is alive with birds who find shelter, nesting sites and protection from predators in thickets of ivy and other shrubs and climbers which also screen the garden from the hotel. Notable mature specimens include the rare Chinese pocket handkerchief tree, Davidia involucrata, Magnolia sinensis, a row of Rhododendron loderi ‘King George’ and a lovely assortment of white and pale yellow hellebores.

The property also has a stone built GARAGE and parking for one car, and two small garden outbuildings.

In addition the property benefits from a detached SINGLE STOREY GUEST ACCOMMODATION just off the courtyard comprising of bedroom and WC with night storage heater.

Location/Directions - Coombe Cottage is on the B5289, approximately three and a half miles down the valley from Keswick, adjacent to the Borrowdale Hotel and below High Lodore Farm.

Borrowdale is arguably the most beautiful valley in England with the mighty Skiddaw presiding over Derwentwater, the ‘Queen of the Lakes’. It has been featured in recent television programmes hosted by David Dimbleby and Griff Rhys-Jones, and in the series on Wainwright Walks. The late Alfred Wainwright himself described Borrowdale as the ‘fairest valley’ in the Lake District. It is much loved by walkers, climbers and the true Lake District enthusiast due to its dramatic, stunning scenery.
